The Watcher: Dusty XX
2025, hand woven tapestry (wool, cotton, linen)
19cm w x 25cm h

The first piece in my tapestry series The Watcher - where mannequins sit in that uncanny valley between “art object” and “… okay but why does it feel like she’s looking at me?”

This handwoven portrait is inspired by Dusty XX, my studio muse and a wonderfully unsettling mannequin I bought from a prop sale on the set of Netflix’s Territory. She has that eerie stillness that makes you wonder: Is she alive? Is she haunted? Or is she just judging my life choices from across the room?
Serious art, with a wink.

I’m drawn to the idea that objects might hold energy - that something of us lingers in the things we create and use. In tapestry, that feeling intensifies. The slow rhythm of weaving feels like breathing life into the image, one thread at a time. Dusty XX sits somewhere between the human and the haunted, a reminder that even lifeless forms can seem to be looking back.
